generation assets

Our renewable generation assets

The price and volume of electricity we generate is determined by competitive bids and offers in the wholesale electricity market.  The market is operated in real time by the System Operator (Transpower) and closely regulated and monitored by the Electricity Authority. They ensure market participants act fairly with competitors and customers. It’s important that the markets in which we operate are open, fair and efficient – benefiting consumers and contributing to our long-term success. Meridian only generates from renewable sources. All the electricity that we supply to our customers comes from the electricity grid, which mixes electricity supplied from both renewable and non-renewable sources.

Taka's Power Up

Wind Farms

It gets pretty blustery in New Zealand – which is good news for us wind farmers. We have six wind farms spread from Waikato to Southland, plus the iconic, solitary wind turbine in Brooklyn, Wellington. We’ve also designed and built a wind farm at Ross Island in Antarctica that provides power to Scott Base and McMurdo research stations.

Hydro stations

Our seven hydro power stations generate enough renewable electricity to power around 1.4 million homes. Our hydro stations can be found in some of the most scenic places in New Zealand, making them popular spots to visit. We own and operate six power stations in the Waitaki hydro

Solar generation

Our pipeline of new renewable development projects includes proposed grid-scale solar farms in Northland and Canterbury. These customers on-sell around 25 gigawatt hours of electricity to Meridian Energy each year, which we resell into the grid.
